S/S 2013 Robert Geller: Dark Moon Beach
New York: Robert Geller’s recent collection drew influence from Anglo-French photographer Sarah Moon, whose dark beachscapes speak to loss, temporality, and the enigma of time. As such, Geller’s models donned ensembles firmly entrenched in the “Dark Surf” look that has lately been popular. Neoprene capes and vests covered sweaters and shirts, while leggings and sleeves made from the same peeked out beneath Bermuda shorts and short-sleeve button fronts. Oskar hats, that evoked Pinocchio’s Tyrolean topper, added a hint of whimsy that mirrored John Lennon specs worked to amplify. Though staple pieces like a khaki trench looked most wearable, ultimately Geller’s message failed to crest under the weight of too-obvious allusions and too-cute styling. —Andrew Luecke
